Continued from Christopher's Main Page. Eastern New Mexico, led by head coach Mark Ribaudo, began recruiting the defensive lineman/tight end during the 2004 season and liked Fichera’s abilities, especially in a 37-20 homecoming win Oct. 1 against the Hobbs Eagles. In the game, Fichera caught two passes for 94 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown bomb from Erik Myles. “They’re real positive and confident in him, especially with his size,” the elder Fichera said. Tigers head coach Bruce Dollar was happy Fichera will go on to not only play ball but continue his education. “They asked me if I wanted to play tight end or defensive end and I said I wouldn’t mind playing either,” he said. “When we went up there to visit the campus and talk to the coaches ... they said with how I’m built and how I’m going to grow, I’m better off at tight end.” “They sent me their summer workout plan and I’ve been doing that for the past two weeks,” Fichera said. “I’m getting used to getting my times (for running exercises) down and am hitting them pretty good, so it should be no problem (when school comes around).” Copyright © 2004 Alamogordo News, a Gannett Co., Inc. newspaper. |
